Brianna Hahn – Aquatennial Candidate

Brianna Hahn, daughter of Curt and Tracy Hahn, will be among 50 candidates vying for the title of Queen of the Lakes at the Minneapolis Aquatennial festivities July 15-22.  Candidates come from ambassadors who have previously represented their communities.  Brianna was crowned Miss Gaylord in 2010.

Each year, the Queen of the Lakes and two Aquatennial Princesses are chosen to represent the festival and City of Minneapolis all over the state, nation and world.  Fifty young women representing communities throughout the state of Minnesota participate in this once-in-a-lifetime program.

During her preparation for this event, Anna said she has spoken with Madeline Schmitz and Mikayla Mages, former Miss Sleepy Eye and Aquatennial candidates, as to what to expect.

“It’s still very new to me and I still do not know fully what to expect, but I’m excited,” Anna exclaimed. “It takes a lot of mental preparation.”

Anna mentioned The Queen of the Lakes is known for being one of the most traveled queens in the nation.
Since 1940, the Aquatennial has selected ambassadors to represent the Aquatennial throughout the state, nation and world. The Aquatennial Ambassadors make over 300 appearances a year.

Being chosen to represent the Aquatennial and the state of Minnesota would be an experience, Anna said, she wouldn’t pass up—even if it meant postponing her education for one year to fulfill the duties as queen. At the end of her time as an ambassador, the queen is given a scholarship to continue her education.

One item that Anna has spent a great deal of time preparing for is the Meet the Candidates event during the week where each candidate is required to wear something that either represents their character or the town from which they are representing.

Anna has decided to wear a “corn dress” to represent the city of Sleepy Eye. She credits her mom, Judy’s, imagination and creativity with coming up with a pattern and sewing a dress that looks like an ear of corn.
During the time she wears the dress, Anna will also have the opportunity to tell others about the community of Sleepy Eye and what it represents.

“I will talk about Buttered Corn Days and how the community rallies around the celebration. I will also talk about farming, which is a large part of our community,” Anna said.

Buttered Corn Days was one of Anna’s favorite events that she was a part of as Miss Sleepy Eye, she added.
The Queen of the Lakes Scholarship Program begins July 15 and culminates with coronation of the Queen of the Lakes and two Aquatennial princesses on July 20 at the Ted Mann Concert Hall at the U of M campus beginning at 7 p.m.
